Richard comes to Murphy with over 33 years in finance and accounting. Upon his graduation from Virginia Tech in 1974 with a degree in Accounting, he began his career in a Public Accounting firm. While there he achieved his CPA and worked his way to partner with a staff of over 10 in his 14 years at the firm. His exposure with the firm allowed him to see a myriad of different businesses and a multitude of different accounting systems.

His responsibilities included preparation and review of compiled, reviewed and audited financial statements. He also prepared and reviewed income tax returns for individual, corporate, partnership and LLCs. His duties also included consultation, management advisory services, payroll services, monthly accounting services and consultation with regard to estate and gift taxation.

In 1988, he along with two other investors created a start up wholesale electrical supply company that successfully grew in sales, net earnings and sellers discretionary cash flow for each of the eight straight years he was a stockholder of the Company. His duties in this venture started with formulation of the business plan and securing debt and equity capital needed to start the business. Subsequent to start up, his duties consisted of controller and accounting manager responsibilities.

In 1996, he sold his interest in the electrical supply company and became a partner with Gordon H. Watkins of Old Dominion Business Associates, a successful Business Intermediary which had been around since 1981. He and Gordon successfully acted as an Intermediary helping their clients successfully value and sell their small and medium sized businesses. They have also consulted with countless other companies to position their businesses in the most advantageous light maximizing the value of their Company. In particular, Mr. Halterman has assisted many companies in debt restructure/refinancing, accounting services, tax return preparation and management advisory services.

He was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley and has always been an active member of a multitude of church and civic organizations. He and his wife Sally currently reside in Fort Defiance, VA.
