History
In 1945, brothers-in-law, Burton Baskin and Irvine Robbins shared a dream to create a neighborhood meeting place that served delicious ice cream flavors for families. The two entrepreneurs wanted to capitalize on America's love of ice cream and started ice cream stores separately.
By 1948, they had six stores in southern California and were serving up more than 21 flavors using high-quality natural ingredients. They each found that managing the stores required a person at each store that had a vested interest in its success and provided the store managers with a degree of ownership resulting in the first ice cream franchising business.
By 1949, they realized controlling their supply chain was essential to the quality and innovation of flavors. In 1953, the two combined their stores into Baskin-Robbins 31 flavors where 31 represented a different flavor for each day of the month.
In 1954, Baskin-Robbins faced their competitors at the Los Angeles County Fair where they won their first Gold Medal and have earned Gold Medals for Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream every year since. Baskin-Robbins became an ice cream empire during the 1960s having expanded to more than 400 stores throughout America. Baskin-Robbins then opened stores in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Korea and Australia launching their international expansion in 1970.
To this day, Baskin-Robbins maintains a small business approach to its franchises with franchise operators owning the store and product development and marketing handled by corporate. This equation has built Baskin-Robbins into the largest ice cream chain in the world.
