Additionally, Dogtopia recognized the potential for a knowledge gap between its U.S.-based head office and Canadian franchisees within the chain and responded with a somewhat specialized organizational structure – the Regional Developer model.
What is a “Regional Developer” Model?
Regional Developers invest their capital into acquiring territorial rights to a particular franchise concept, and then invest their time, efforts, knowledge, experience and abilities into recruiting and supporting Franchisees located within that territory.
History
Dogtopia was founded by a couple in Virginia, in 2002 who had started franchising in 2005. They grew the company to 26 franchise stores and 4 corporate stores which was then purchased by Thomas Franchise Solutions. Thomas Franchise Solutions (TFS), is a group of friends and family that have tremendous franchising background and a great deal of money at their disposal. The family had decided to research different franchise areas to develop and came upon the dog space because it was the fastest growing market. Chairman of the Board, Peter H. Thomas, founder of Century 21 in Canada, along with his team of long-time franchise development specialists from brands such as Gloria Jeans, Massage Envy, KinderCare, Domino’s Pizza, Poppa John’s Pizza, have over 150 years of franchise experience all together. The group cleaned up the model and created the well-oiled business model Dogtopia is today. With 101 stores and 250 in some stage of development Dogtopia.
