History

Edo Japan opened its first location in 1979. Its founder, Buddhist minister Susumu Ikuta, started the company as a way to provide traditional Japanese meals in a food court setting. His signature secret teriyaki sauce was one of the ingredients that instantly set Edo Japan apart. Within two years, the company opened a second location and continued to grow.

In 1999, Tom Donaldson took over as CEO. His vision included the expansion of Edo Japan into a strong franchise operation that would include street front restaurant locations in addition to mall locations. His tenure saw the introduction of a sushi menu in 2006, which has become one of Edo Japan's most popular items.

In the past decade, the company has experienced strong growth, opening its 100th location and expanding its reach to Eastern Canada. During these years, the company and its leadership won several awards, including the bronze medal at the Canadian Franchise Association Awards of Excellence in Franchising, and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Hospitality and Tourism award for Tom Donaldson. Edo Japan was also a "Franchisees' Choice" of the Canadian Franchise Association for five years in a row.

Today, under the leadership of Dave Minnett, who became CEO in 2016, Edo Japan continues its expansion both in terms of concept and locations. Staying on-trend, the company opened a concept store called Fresh Take, offering established menu items and ready-to-go food, all in an updated setting. New items include imported Japanese snacks and an assortment of bowls. New franchise owners can expect the updated design and selection. Current locations will also gradually adopt some aspects of the new branding.

Ideal Candidate

Great candidates for operating an Edo Japan franchise will be committed to its ideals of healthy food and excellent service and ingredients. They will have a net worth of at least $300,000. In addition, Edo Japan requires a liquidity of at least 50 percent of the total investment, which can range approximately between $306,000 and $375,000 for a food court location, and between $421,000 and $525,000 for a street front location. Costs may also vary depending on the specific location and its needs.
