History
Walter and Dorothy Elmer opened the first Elmer's in 1960 in Oregon, bringing over 20 years of restaurant experience to the endeavor. This first location opened under the name of Elmer's Colonial Pancake House and served home-style menu items, cooked from fresh ingredients and to a high standard. At the time, the restaurant served all-day breakfast and focused on high-quality pancakes from a secret recipe. The Elmer's opened their second restaurant in 1962 and changed its name to Elmer's Pancake & Steak House.
In 1966, Elmer's made its start as a franchised business. The restaurant also expanded its menu to include a wider variety of lunch and dinner offerings. Within the next few years, the franchise grew rapidly, adding over 20 locations.
In 1984, the Elmer family sold the company to an investment group and Herman Goldberg became the CEO. Goldberg spearheaded a number of changes and updates. Under his leadership, the company changed its name to Elmer's Restaurants. It also updated its restaurants' décor while retaining some of the traditional elements that created their trademark homey atmosphere.
In 1999 CBW Inc. took control over Elmer's and introduced new management practices. Some of these included redesigning the menu and standardizing it for all franchisees.
Today, Elmer's continues to pride itself on cultivating customer loyalty. It continues to uphold its core values of presenting a traditional-style menu that pleases all family members from seniors to children.
