History
In 1958, with $600 borrowed from their mom, the Carney brothers opened a pizza place in Wichita, Kansas. Their sign limited the amount of space they had for a name to eight letters, so they named it Pizza Hut. The service was friendly, the pizza was amazing and the atmosphere felt like home By 1969, the iconic red roofs were added to the restaurants, and by 1971, Pizza Hut was the number one restaurant chain in the world. The brothers innovated the pizza industry, introducing the Original Pan Pizza crust in 1980 and the Hand-Tossed Traditional dough in 1988.
The brothers wanted to be active participants in the communities where Pizza Huts were located, so they founded Book It, the brand’s national reading incentive program. This tied in with the Reading is Fundamental program championed by First Lady Barbara Bush. When she threw a pizza party for 200 children at the White House in 1989, Pizza Hut made the delivery.
Always looking for a new way to improve customer service, they became the first national chain to offer online ordering in 1994. Pizza delivery went to new heights in 2001 when Pizza Hut made a delivery to the International Space Station. Phone ordering apps and an exclusive Xbox 360 in-game app increased customer convenience by allowing customers to order from wherever they were.
Ideal Candidate
Pizza Hut believes that the restaurant business requires hands-on experience to be successful. Ideal candidates must not only have a background in the industry, preferably quick service, but they should also have a passion for operations. Owners must be customer-focused with excellent attention to detail. Successful franchisers are leaders, with the drive and desire to build successful teams and multi-location businesses.
