History
Ron Fraedrick opened the first TacoTime in 1960. He became inspired by the Mexican food he tasted while traveling in Southern California in the course of his petroleum sales position. He developed a range of proprietary recipes for spice blend and sauces, then opened the first TacoTime location near the University of Oregon. The restaurant proved popular, and soon afterwards expanded to a total of three locations.
In 1962, TacoTime began franchising additional locations throughout the Washington area. The business continued to grow throughout the decade, expanding to 48 locations in seven states by the end of the 60s and to 150 locations by the end of the 70s. In 1978, the franchise opened its first international location in Alberta, Canada. More recently, Kahala Brands, currently a subsidiary of MTY Foods, acquired TacoTime and continues to manage it today.
Ideal Candidate
The initial franchise fee for a traditional TacoTime restaurant is $30,000. The fee for a walk-up location is $7,500. Discounts on the initial franchise fee may be available. The estimated investment range is $396,150 to $814,050 for a traditional restaurant and $144,650 to $424,550 for a non-traditional location.
Although TacoTime does not require prior restaurant experience, it prefers franchisees who have proven themselves in a managerial capacity. An ideal franchisee will also be highly motivated, entrepreneurial and willing to follow the TacoTime business model.
